What Is a Balance Sheet, and Why Should You Care?
By Matthew Slomowicz·June 8, 2026·4 min read
A balance sheet is a snapshot of what your business owns and owes at a single point in time — a companion to the P&L, not a replacement for it.
The three sections
Assets are what the business owns — cash, equipment, receivables. Liabilities are what it owes — loans, credit cards, unpaid bills. Equity is the difference between the two: what's actually left for the owner.
Why it matters beyond the P&L
A business can show a healthy monthly profit on its P&L while quietly building up debt or shrinking cash reserves — something only the balance sheet reveals.
Reviewing both statements together, monthly, gives a far more complete picture than either one alone.
